This is really NORMAL.
Except we never see it-so it is terrifying and uncomfortable when it happens.
(Mostly because people would laugh or be unkind)

I own a sex shop. Once a woman bled on our chair during an interview. She was horrified and felt ashamed because it was in some way unprofessional. We weren’t bothered. We said ‘what better place to work on being ok with your body than at a feminist sex shop?’
Bleeding is normal and dealing with it is one of the most pervasive ways women are complicit in their silence.

Some men bleed too. How would you react to that? For many men who are Trans the act of bleeding is a security threat.

“Muslims make up just 6% of the population of Europe, and have consistently committed less than 0.5% of the terrorist attacks over the last 5 years. Much is still unknown about the attackers, yet already there has been a widespread consensus that this is the result of Islamic extremism. Today all Muslims in Britain are being blamed for the actions of two men. Particularly shocking was the BBC’s Nick Robinson rushing to say the men were of “Muslim appearance”, and the reporter on ITV news describes it as the “day that Baghdad style violence came to South London.”

The media’s repeated scapegoating of the Muslim population and its continual ‘clash of civilisations’ narrative must be challenged. It is time we recognise and fight against the distorted depictions of Muslims we see every day in the media. When a Muslim murders a white man it is denounced as terrorism and considered worthy of rolling news coverage but when a Muslim is killed in a racist attack, like the one on 75 year-old Mohammed Saleem in Birmingham earlier this month, it is treated as a one-off murder and largely ignored. These blatant double standards are not acceptable.”

Report back from extra-dom on the ‘Sunshine on Leith’ film set!

We arrived at the long, white marquee at 7am, to queue for costume and makeup in the Princes Street Bandstand. Given a quick examination by the costume dept., hairsprayed and sent up to the Mound square, to rehearse and film.

We learned the dance routine and some simple roles (as crowd members) at the Mound, then rehearsed. And shot. And shot some more. Every scene (and we were only doing one scene today) has to be shot multiple times, from all angles, with a hundred little director’s tweaks along the way. I lost count of the number of times we heard the phrase ‘That was perfect. Once more…’ The people surrounding me in the crowd estimated we’d get roughly 3 minutes footage in total, from all of the work done today. Not all of it was filming, either; adjustment of every camera angle means adjustment of every piece of equipment; we spent hours of the day standing around as everything was shifted to different sides of the square (though this did mean we were able to watch some of the shots focussing on the main characters – the two young lovers, “our heroes” – which was pretty impressive).

I gained so, so much respect for film crews today. Seriously. Today was 11 hours long, and during every second of that the crew were pulling, pushing and heaving machinery; lugging food, water, and information between cast and crew; filming, photographing, taking and re-taking shoots with the utmost care, and walkie-talkie-ing everything into place. They were paid the same amount as the extras (£62 a day), and were working far, far harder than us. And all of that for just 5 minutes of film!

Regardless of the repetition, the waiting, the endless re-takes, however, there was a buzz about the set – a great feeling of team effort and enthusiasm – that meant filming never felt like hard work. Maybe it’s something about acting, or about group projects; expressiveness and emotion (no matter how false) in a common cause seemed to pull people together. The scene itself – the grand finale of the film – was full of joy and excitement, so every take ended on a high (regardless of how tired or bored you might have been at the start).
And ultimately, it was fun! Playing-pretend, whether it’s at being in a spontaneous street musical, or at buying a fake spinach wrap for the 7^th time in a row, is never not enjoyable.

Moreover, my legs are aching and I got pretty well sunburnt, both of which make me extremely happy.

Overall, 10/10 would do again. Because why not, eh?

EDIT: It also meant I got up at 5am this morning, and am fucking exhausted. Why the fuck am I still online?

So I’m going to be an extra in a film about The Proclaimers!

To be honest, I don’t even like them that much. And I have to be there at 7am. But hey - I’m getting paid £62 for doing a fucking ridiculous dance to ‘500 Miles’ in Princes Street Gardens (along with a [hopefully] big crowd of volunteers!). What’s not to love?!

(Praying that I’m not visible enough to be spotted by anyone I know…)
